HELP - VPI Prime Sig - Setup question..setting up now!

Postby mgrenwic » Sat Oct 12, 2019 12:51 pm

Hello. After a 10 year wait, and a 1 month wait after ordering, my table is here.
Sorry for the dramatic title, but I am sitting her and actively setting up this beast.
The cartridge was pre installed so I have that going for me.

When I do the Alignment jig, should I remove the felt pad from the platter first?

If the cartridge is pre-installed why do you need to use the jig?

Probably best to do so. In any case, with the stylus resting on the jig, the top of the cartridge should be parallel to to the surface of the jig. You can then adjust the tonearm height to make it parallel to the record surface when you're done. Fine-tune from there. A lot of folks here use a bare platter. You're wise to double-check the alignment.

Personally, I don't do it like that....It takes me a few setups to get it the way I like it. If you set the cartridge up with the stylus in the proper place in the jig, as you raise or lower the arm, the cartridge/jig interface will change as will the vtf and azimuth. Its all about listening and adjusting. For me, one of the most important adjustments is azimuth.. It may well take me weeks to properly (to me) set up my turntable, and then I check it every so often. I don't use a mat on my Classic platter.

"Its all about listening and adjusting."

Yes, that's what I meant by fine-tuning.
